Amadeus vs Galileo — Which GDS to learn?
Galileo (Travelport) competes head-to-head with Amadeus in many markets but Amadeus generally wins in terms of airline-content reach, hotel content, and Asian/Middle Eastern adoption.
Quick overview
Amadeus has its strongest market share in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Galileo, run by Travelport, has its strongest presence in Europe, Africa, Middle East.
Syntax difference
Galileo uses a Cryptic command set with different mnemonics (e.g. A15MAYBOMDEL for availability, N1Y1 to sell). Concepts mirror Amadeus but every command differs.
Where Amadeus wins
- Broader low-cost-carrier and Middle Eastern carrier participation.
- Larger user base in India, UAE and Saudi Arabia.
- More modern web-based products (Selling Platform Connect).
Where Galileo wins
- Historically strong in UK, Ireland and parts of Africa.
Which one to learn first?
For students in India, the GCC, South-East Asia, and most of Africa: Amadeus first — it is the dominant GDS in those regions and travel-agency hiring follows it. Galileo can be added later if your target employers specifically require it.
