Amadeus vs Sabre — Which GDS to learn?

Amadeus is the dominant GDS in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Sabre dominates North America. The two systems use different command sets but deliver equivalent functional capabilities.

Quick overview

Amadeus has its strongest market share in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. Sabre, run by Sabre Corporation, has its strongest presence in North America, Latin America.

Syntax difference

Sabre uses a different command vocabulary (e.g. 1§15MAYJFKLAX for availability, 0 to sell, 6 for received-from). Concepts overlap but every keystroke is different from Amadeus.

Where Amadeus wins

  • Larger global airline content footprint, especially Europe, Middle East and Asia.
  • More widely used in Indian, GCC and African travel-agency markets.
  • Cleaner separation of availability, fare and ticketing workflows (AN → FXP → TTP).

Where Sabre wins

  • Closer integration with major US carriers and US TMCs.
  • Stronger NDC connectivity with American Airlines and Alaska in some markets.

Which one to learn first?

For students in India, the GCC, South-East Asia, and most of Africa: Amadeus first — it is the dominant GDS in those regions and travel-agency hiring follows it. Sabre is a strong second choice if your target market is North America.
